Divisions of Play

Peanuts

Tee Ball Baseball is for boys and girls 4-5 years old who want to learn the fundamentals of hitting and fielding. In Tee Ball, players hit a ball off a batting tee. The rules of the game are designed to accommodate the need for teaching. As a Non-Competitive Division, the primary goals of Tee Ball are to instruct children in the fundamentals of baseball, to allow them to experience the value of teamwork, and give them the opportunity to play baseball with their friends. No score is kept, no outs can be made and the last batter in each inning clears the bases! Games are on Saturdays with one practice per week Monday thru Friday. Practice date to be determined by the team manager.

Farm

Farm Baseball is for boys and girls 6-7 years old who are moving toward hitting a pitched ball. The team coach pitches the ball. The rules of the game are designed to accommodate the need for teaching. Putouts can be made at the bases. As a Non-Competitive Division, the primary goals of Farm are to instruct children in the fundamentals of baseball, to allow them to experience the value of teamwork, and to allow them to play baseball with their friends. No score is kept. Outs are not tallied. Usually half of the line-up bats per inning. Games are on Saturday with one practice per week, Monday through Friday. The practice date is to be determined by the team manager.

Single-A

Single-A Baseball is a division designed for children aged 7 to 9, both boys and girls, who can hit a baseball pitch from a designated mound area. In this division, we utilize a pitching machine because the young players are not yet capable of pitching the ball over a 46-foot distance. This approach ensures consistency and allows the players to focus on developing fundamental hitting and fielding skills.

Single-A Baseball is considered the first competitive division in Little League. Its main objectives are to establish fair and balanced competition within the division and provide a platform for both team and individual skill development. In this division, scores are kept, and only swinging strikes count as strikes. Players can be put out at bases, and an inning ends either when three outs are recorded or when a team scores 5 runs. The games consist of 6 innings.

Players interested in participating in this division must attend player evaluations.  While teams are mostly formed based on elementary schools at this level, skills evaluations still help establish a player's fit for the division and within a given team.  Typically, games are scheduled for one on Saturday and one on a weekday, with one practice per week, which will be determined by the team manager.

AA

AA Baseball is designed for children aged 8 to 10, encompassing both boys and girls who are making the transition from machine or coach-pitched play to facing youth pitchers from the opposing team. This division has two primary objectives: to establish a level playing field for fair and balanced competition within the division and to offer a platform for the development of both team and individual skills.

In AA Baseball, players can build on the rules from Single-A, which means they can now steal bases, and balls as well as non-swinging strikes are called by the umpire. Games are typically scheduled for one on Saturday and one on a weekday, with one practice each week, the specific day determined by the team manager.

Triple A

AAA Baseball is intended for children between the ages of 9 and 11, both boys and girls, who are in the process of further honing their skills within a competitive baseball setting. This division serves as the highest Minor division in the Walnut Creek Little League before players advance to the Little League Majors level.

Being a Competitive Division, the primary objectives of AAA Baseball encompass several key aspects. First, it aims to ensure fair and balanced competition within the division. Second, it provides a suitable platform for the development of both team and individual skills. Lastly, it serves as a crucial step in preparing players for the transition to the Majors Division.

Games in AAA Baseball are typically scheduled with one game on Saturdays and one during the week. Additionally, players can expect one practice session per week, held on a day between Sunday and Friday, with the specific day determined by the team manager.

Majors

Majors Baseball is tailored for youngsters between the ages of 11 and 12, including both boys and girls. It serves as the stage where these young players refine the skills they've been cultivating in the Minor divisions, marking the next step in their competitive baseball journey. Majors Baseball is also recognized as the Little League Baseball Division.

Within this Competitive Division, Majors Baseball has a set of primary objectives. First and foremost, it strives to establish a fair and equitable competitive environment throughout the division. Second, it offers an ideal platform for enhancing both team and individual skills. Lastly, it plays a crucial role in preparing players for the higher levels of play that lie ahead.

Typically, Majors Baseball games are scheduled with one taking place on Saturdays and another on a weekday. Additionally, players can anticipate one practice session per week, with the specific day being determined by the team manager and falling on any day between Sunday and Friday.

Intermediate (50/70)

Intermediate (50/70) Baseball is tailored for 13-year-old boys and girls who are getting ready to make the shift from playing on 46/60-foot fields to the larger 60/90-foot sized baseball fields. The 50/70 Division serves as a crucial step in helping players prepare for higher divisions and high school baseball. It offers them the opportunity to gradually adapt to the larger field dimensions before they fully transition to the standard 60/90-foot fields.

As a Competitive Division, the primary objectives of Intermediate (50/70) Baseball are twofold. Firstly, it aims to provide the players with a suitable environment to make a smooth transition from the traditional Little League Baseball field sizes to the larger fields commonly found in more competitive youth baseball arenas, including high school level play.

Juniors Baseball

Juniors Baseball is designed for players aged 13 to 14, offering a true baseball experience with 90-foot bases, a 60-foot pitching distance, lead-offs, pick-offs, steals, and rules regarding balks, all complemented by strategic gameplay. Practices and most games take place at our Foothill Middle School Juniors Field, with scheduling mindful of the active lives of teenagers.

The division winner of Juniors Baseball advances to the Tournament of Champions (TOC), and an All-Star team is chosen from the talented pool of players. For those who desire more baseball action, we also provide an additional program running concurrently, offering more games and increased competition. Players in this program will follow an extra practice schedule and participate in Local League Tournaments.
